Theater stars know what’s hot in entertainment, fashion and pop culture, so Broadway.com decided it was high time to tap in to the after-hours obsessions of our favorite stage actors. Jeremy Shamos currently stars in The Assembled Parties as Jeff, an eager-to-please Harvard Law student invited to stay with the secular Jewish Bascov family. When Shamos isn't playing the subdued, respectful mensch at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, he's busy playing with Exit Strategy NYC, reading Thomas Mann and shelling pistachios. Read below to find out what else Shamos can't get enough of!
BOOK: Joseph and His Brothers
"I'm reading John E. Wood's 'new' (2005) translation of Thomas Mann's Joseph and His Brothers. It is 1,492 pages and carrying it around makes me look smart and important. Also, it is an incredibly detailed and beautiful retelling of Joseph's fall into slavery and his rise to become one of the most powerful men in Egypt. The main thing, though, is that it really does make me seem very intelligent."
MOVIE: The Staircase
"As far as movie obsessions go, most of my true obsessions are documentaries. The Staircase is sickly addictive and engrossing. The less you know about it the better, as with all 'entertainments.' I love not knowing anything, and seeing something as the creator intended it (which is getting more and more rare these days) and The Staircase unfolds amazingly during its six hours."
STAGE SHOW (OTHER THAN MY OWN): The Flick
"What can I say? I don't throw the term 'art' around (except when looking at paintings my kids make...also Picasso) but that show was a piece of art. Artful writing, directing, design and acting, coming together to make an incredible event in the theater. Come on!"
CELEBRITY
"I'm really into Judith Light and Bobby Cannavale. Great at their craft and great at being great people. Also, both very attractive."
APP: Exit Strategy NYC
"It is an app that has all the entrances and exits for every subway station...second car from the back, second door, etc. There is something very satisfying about being right where you want to be when you get to the station where you are going. Especially when you are already seven minutes late."
BEAUTY PRODUCT
"I'm pretty sure what you call a 'beauty' product is what I call 'really cool lotion and stuff that doesn't smell and probably helps you with shaving and is also super manly.' If that is what you mean, I'm OBSESSED (meaning I think it is pretty cool, you know, for this kinda stuff) with Dermalogica pre-shave guard. I wonder if this mention might convince Dermalogica (what a company!) to send a lifetime supply of shaving products to the stage door at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, 261 W. 47th. St., New York, NY 10036."
RANDOM OBSESSION
"I am randomly obsessed with shelled pistachios. I've always liked pistachios, and kind of enjoyed shelling them as I ate them, a kind of 'working for my food' like the way putting together your own fajitas at your table at a Mexican restaurant is like 'cooking.' But, then I got a bag of WONDERFUL brand shelled pistachios and I have genuinely never looked back, even when people are screaming and saying I pushed them. WONDERFUL is the brand name and they seem like a GREAT COMPANY. That address again is 261 W. 47th. St., Attn: J. Shamos."
